Philip Horne playing the lute

Venetian Lute Music at the turn of the 16th Century

Music of the Lute from the start of the 16th Century played by Philip Horne

The late 15th and early 16th centuries were a time of great musical innovation, like the birth of jazz or the British Invasion in the 20th century. For the 13th through the 15th centuries, lute music played a mostly supporting role, and was not considered "serious" music. But in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, composers experimented with new musical forms and created a "serious" lute music. We will explore the Ricercar, the "study" form of early lute music composed by Francesco Spinacino, Vincenzo Capirola and Marco d'Aquila. Their works elevated the lute to the status of "serious" music and laid the groundwork for the following 300 years of serious music written for the lute by major composers of those eras.

Seating is very limited.

About

Lute

Philip Horne

Philip began playing the lute 20 years ago, after 15 years of painfully bad classical guitar playing. He has taken private lessons with Phil Rukvina, Ed Martin, Crawford Young, Pat O’Brien, and Paul O’Dette. He has also participated in Master classes with these and other fine lute players including Hopkinson Smith. He plays a beautiful 6 course lute made in 2017 by British luthier Malcolm Prior. In his down time when he’s not playing the lute, he teaches mathematics.
Vox

Matthew Royal

Matt works with databases, but in 2007 earned his degree in Music at Pensacola Christian College. He loves tedious tasks such as alphabetically sorting file folders, entering data into forms, and transcribing frottole into modern musical notation. When not busy comforting his 2 co-dependent cockapoos, he sings Renaissance music and spends too much time online.
